What is the Champions League?
Loosely based on the Champions League tournament format for European soccer club teams, the Lancaster Church Softball Champions League places the top teams from county church softball leagues in an end-of-year tournament.
Seven leagues were invited to participate in the tournament for 2008: Donegal, Ephrata Area, Ephrata, Hempfield, Manheim, New Holland, and Pequea Valley. Five accepted – the ones with standing pages on this site. Each league receives 2 automatic bids and 2-3 qualifier bids (see Info tab) for a total of 22 teams out of 81. The 12 qualifying bid teams play one game on Monday August 18 or Tuesday August 19 to determine the 6 entries that will join the automatic bid teams. On Saturday, August 23, the 10 automatic bid and 6 qualifier winners will be grouped into 4 pools of 4 teams each for the morning. From there, teams will be eliminated and seeded into a single elimination tournament for the afternoon. The winner claims the best church softball team in Lancaster for 2008!
Reason for doing the tournament:
1. Relationships can be made and fellowship experienced to glorify God.
2. Bring together players and teams from churches that normally would not play each other within the context of a fun, competitive tournament.
3. Excitement among leagues and teams.
4. Ability to root for a team from your own league!
5. Crown a countywide (at least northern) church softball team.
Other information:
- Any proceeds from the tournament, if there is any, will be distributed to the top three teams’ charities of their choosing.
- Tournament is not hosted by one league. All leagues have helped to put it together.
